TIPS FOR VISITING CALIFORNIA TIDE POOLS
I recommend you follow these tips to get the best experience with California Tide Pools.
1) Check the Tidal Charts: Tide Pools Ca are best explored during low tides when the water is at its lowest point. Before you visit, check the tide tables for the time and height of the waves in the area that you will be visiting.
2) Wear Sturdy Beach Footwear: Tide pools are often slippery or with rocky pointed edges. Flip-flops or Sandals aren’t recommended for your safety.
3) Bring a Flashlight: Exploring a tide pool at night can be exciting, but having a flashlight to navigate the area safely is equally essential.
BEST CALIFORNIA TIDE POOLS
LEO CARRILLO STATE PARK TIDE POOLS, MALIBU
Located in Malibu, The Leo Carrillo State Park offers incredible views of the Pacific and is home to one of the most spectacular California Tide Pools.
Head towards Sequit Point, located between the North and South beach in the Leo Carrillo State Park, to witness the colourful tide pool.

The park also features an exclusive Dog-friendly beach, rocky coves and other natural rock-climbing structures for the kids.
Caution, the area around the tide pools might be rocky and slippery. Ensure to wear proper beach shoes.
You need to pay via a pay-by-phone app or some online means, and cash isn’t accepted at this place. So ensure to make proper online arrangements before your visit.
If you have spare time, explore the nearby craggy cliffs on El Matador State Beach, located within 4-miles of the Leo Carrillo State Park. There are miles of beautiful hiking trails if you are an avid hiker.
DANA POINT TIDE POOLS, ORANGE COUNTY
Located at a 2-hour driving distance towards the South of the Leo Carrillo State Park is the Dana Point Tide Pools, one of the hidden California Tide Pools in Orange County.
The tide pools begin North of the beach behind the Ocean Institute at the Dana Point Harbor and extend a few hundred yards along the shoreline.
Take a leisurely stroll along the shoreline, dotted with large boulders and rocky coves, and explore the diverse species underwater, a unique and fascinating experience, especially during low tides.
The pools become a shallow, sandy lagoon filled with a teeming life below the clear waters.
Dana Point tide pools are the best place for nature lovers, from starfish and anemones to more exotic creatures such as rock crabs and sea snails.
Wear proper beach shoes as the algae-covered boulders in the region might get slippery. Also, it is equally important to remember to be mindful and not to harm or remove any sea creatures from the waters.

ASILOMAR AND POINT PINOS STATE BEACH, PACIFIC GROVE
Located on the gorgeous Monterey Bay, Asilomar State Beach, is known for its expansive sandy shorelines and is home to one of the stunning California Tide Pools.
The best part of this tide pool is that even the tiny creatures are visible during high tide. Thanks to the teeming marine life under the water.
But you will have the best experience during low tides. Enjoy the sights of colourful tide pools dotted with rocky points and sandy spots, filled with sea urchins, mussels and sea crabs.
Point Pinos is located at a distance of just one mile North of Asilomar State Beach. Apart from its historic lighthouse, you can find many gorgeous tide pools along the rocky shoreline near the golf course.
Although Point Pinos is outside the park, it is one of the richest Pacific tide pools, home to abundant marine life. You may even spot some during high tides too.
If you have spare time, head South towards Pebble Beach to discover more wonderful tidepools with fantastic scenery of the Pacific in the backdrop.
Stroll on the path between the ocean and sandy shores to take in the incredible sunset views.

COAL POINT TIDE POOLS, SANTA BARBARA
Sitting on the mouth of Coal Creek Canyon in Santa Barbara, the Coal Point Tide pools are one of the most gorgeous California Tide pools.
The region is part of El Captain State Beach and got its name from the oil deposits due to oil spills several decades ago.
These series of tide pools, whose rocky floors are covered by algae, are caused by low-lying rock formations and are also safe to explore.

Look at the hermit crabs, sea anemones, algae-covered rocks, seaweed, mussels, sea urchins, molluscs, starfish and some rare marine species.
Check out the colourful birds like Pelicans and Gulls; this Reserve is one of their natural habitats. You might even spot migratory birds during peak birding season.

When the tide recedes, you will witness the colour-changing moss on the rocks, the main draw of Carlsbad tide pools.
Have a splash in these pools while appreciating the beautiful marine creatures like sea crabs, snails, barnacles, urchins and much more.
Go Surfing, Jet Skiing and Longboarding. Don’t miss looking out for Dolphins, Sea lions and even whales.
The Carlsbad region is also a popular birding area. Get a pair of binoculars to spot seagulls, Pelicans, Cormorants and many more colourful birds.
DUXBURY REEF AT AGATE COUNTY PARK, BOLINAS, MARIN COUNTY
If you are looking for a weekend vacation spot near San Francisco, especially with kids, check out Duxbury Reef at Agate County Park, 32 miles from SF.
These are among the most beautiful Northern California tide pools known for their stunning array of Wildlife.
The reef, situated in the Southernmost region of the Point Reyes Peninsula in Marin County, is a unique geographical structure that spans several miles parallel to the shoreline.
When the tides are low, the reefs are exposed, and you will see a series of rocky outcroppings filled with abundant marine life, including sea cucumbers, urchins, anemones, crabs and starfishes.

LITTLE CORONA DEL MAR BEACH
If you are in the entertainment capital of the world, Los Angeles, looking for a place away from the hustle and bustle of town, head to Little Corona Del Mar Beach, located about an hour’s driving distance from LA.
Little Corona Del Mar Beach is blessed with one of the most beautiful California Tide Pools. Sitting along the shores of New Port Beach, these tide pools are known for their unique geographical structures and calm setting.

EL MATADOR STATE BEACH TIDE POOLS, MALIBU
For one of the unique California tide pooling experiences, check out the El Matador State Beach Tide pools, nestled amidst the rugged Pacific coastline and home to an array of beautiful rocky coves offering spectacular vistas.
The beach is lined with magnificent giant monoliths and can be accessed via a beautiful trail from the parking lot.
Enjoy the views of various colourful marine beings, including Mussels, Barnacles, Sea anemones, Urchins, Snails and vibrant florae underwater during low tides.
El Matador State Beach is also a haven for birdwatchers. Don’t miss getting a pair of binoculars to spot varieties of colourful birds resting on the cliff highs.
Go Sunbathing, fishing or exploring the trails around. If you have spare time, visit the nearby Point Dume State Beach, 10 minutes from El Matador State Beach.
Ensure to wear proper beach shoes since the path to the beach is quite steep, and you will need a firm grip.
NATURAL BRIDGES STATE BEACH TIDE POOLS, SANTA CRUZ
Towards the South of Davenport and 3 miles West of Santa Cruz is Natural Bridges State Beach. Sitting on the end of iconic West Cliff Drive and Swanton Blvd, this is one of the beautiful California Tide Pools.
The State Park and the tide pool get their names from the nearby historic rock arch bridge.
Stroll the park and head to the visitor centre to enquire about the guided tide pool tours which run throughout the year.
The main draw of Natural Bridges State Beach is that many small, deep, and expansive tide pools serve as a natural habitat for a teeming underwater life.
Visit the tide pools during the second half of the day. You can relax by the beach when you are done observing vibrant Sea Anemones, Urchins, Snails, Shore Crabs and Starfishes.
Take in the views of the large rock bench, Moore Creek, which flows through the park, and the rugged giant cliff views that adorn the shoreline with a fantastic sunset in the background.
If you time your visit right, you may spot Monarch butterflies since Natural Bridges State Beach is a hotspot, especially during their migratory phase.
Don’t forget to carry a camera and a pair of Binoculars to get a close-up look at these beautiful creatures.
TREASURE COVE BEACH TIDE POOLS, NEWPORT BEACH
Located on the end of the Northern boundary of Newport Beach, near Crystal Cove, Treasure Cove Beach is truly a treasure with its rocky pools and sandy shoreline.

This park has two tide pools, protected by a rocky shoreline that offers plenty of places to explore.

When the water level recedes, an entire another world will be revealed. You will have fantastic opportunities to observe sea cucumbers, sea urchins, and starfishes.
Park near any of the two tide pools and explore the nearby incredible trails, which offer lovely Pacific views.
LA JOLLA TIDE POOLS, SAN DIEGO
If you are looking for tide pools near San Diego, head to La Jolla, home to one of the best sets of California Tide Pools.
The unique rock formations and the varied terrain add an additional charm to the tide pools. Visit La Jolla Cove, located at the North end of Scripps Park, a popular tide pooling area in this region.
The algae-covered rocks, the waves crashing against the rugged shoreline, the craggy cliffs, the expansive views of the Pacific, series of small beautiful tide pools all make La Jolla one of the popular tide pooling locations in California.
You will see many California tide pool creatures like hermit crabs, mussels, limpets, sea anemones, starfish, urchins, seagrass and moss-covered rocks underneath clear waters.
Apart from tide pooling, La Jolla is perfect for snorkelling and seal-watching. Spend a lovely evening on the sandy shores of La Jolla Beach with your loved one watching an incredible sunset or playing frisbee or beach volleyball with your friends!
La Jolla is also a popular birding location. If you are a bird-watching enthusiast, visit this place to capture the views of colourful coastal birds like Pelicans, Cormorants and Gulls.
Tide pooling here is best done between December and March.

CABRILLO TIDE POOLS, SAN DIEGO
If you are looking for one of the vibrant Souther Ca tide pools, visit Cabrillo Beach, located at a 25-minute driving distance from San Diego.
Less than two miles North of Cabrillo National Monument, the famous Point Loma Tide Pools under the sandstone cliffs is a series of beautiful California tide pools home to marine flora and fauna varieties.
The National Park Service maintains Cabrillo Tide Pools and the Point Loma area.
When the tides are low, you will see periwinkle snails, limpets, troglodyte chitons, Kellet’s whelks, sandcastle worms, mussels and barnacles.
At the bottom of the tide pools, you may see red algae, kelps, seagrass and other marine friends like lobsters and octopuses in the middle intertidal zone.
Since the place is famous across the state, you will usually see crowds. You should visit the tide pools early in the morning or later in the evening when it is not hot and crowded.
To have the best tide pooling experience at Point Loma, visit the place during the fall and winter; the tides will be low, and most of the gorgeous areas of the tide pools will be exposed.
HEISLER PARK IN LAGUNA BEACH
Heisler Park in Laguna Beach is an incredible spot that offers lovely views of the Pacific and is home to beautiful California Tide Pools.
Dotted by rugged cliffs, these tide pools offer spectacular shoreline views and are ideal for a relaxing weekend trip.
The tide pools here are easily accessible; you will reach the Main beach just a stroll away from downtown.
When the tides are low, you can explore these tide pools to see beautiful marine creatures like crabs, anemones, starfish and some unique collections of shells underneath the clear waters.
Unwind on the beach to catch a glimpse of a stunning sunset, or try snorkelling, swimming, or paddle boarding. Go Kayaking to explore the untouched haven of Heisler Park.
Heisler Park is also home to a wide variety of Wildlife. You might spot Dolphins, seagulls, and Whales just off the coast. The park also features a variety of native plants like succulents, cacti and coastal wildflowers.
ABALONE COVE SHORELINE PARK TIDE POOLS, RANCHO PALOS VERDES
If you are looking for one of the majestic California Tide Pools, visit Abalone Cove Shoreline Park, tucked away in the gorgeous hills of Rancho Palos Verdes.
You need to head South of the beach to witness this beautiful hidden gem in California for tide pooling.
Stroll along the shoreline, and you may even spot abalone, a beautiful marine being that inspired the cove’s name.
Check out the bright Starfish, Urchins, barnacles, crabs, mussels, sea grass and other unique marine creatures which adds beauty to these gorgeous tide pools.
Abalone Cove Shoreline Park is an excellent spot for outdoor fun. The sandy beach, lush grassy lawn, picnic tables, and ample parking lot make it an ideal setting for a perfect vacation.
Enjoy the local Wildlife. Seagulls, Pelicans and Coromants are often seen soaring above the shoreline, while Dolphins and Whales can be spotted in the turquoise waters.
If you are an avid hiker, Abalone Cove Shoreline Park region has lovely rugged trails which run amidst the wild and offers incredible views.
BODEGA BAY
One of the beautiful Northern California coastal towns, Bodega Bay in Sonoma County, is a charming hamlet located at a two-hour driving distance from San Francisco.
Bodega Bay is home to spectacular landscapes, including rugged cliffs overlooking gorgeous oceans, excellent seafood, plenty of hiking trails and gorgeous California Tide Pools.
The tide pools here are dotted with a rocky shoreline and are known for their beautiful array of aquatic life, including anemones, starfish, hermit crabs, molluscs, Jellyfish and more.
The tides in Bodega Bay are pretty strong, so wear proper beach accessories and check the tidal charts before you hit the waves for swimming or Surfing.

WILLIAM RANDOLPH HEARST MEMORIAL BEACH
William Randolph Hearst Memorial Beach is one of the popular attractions in San Simeon and is home to beautiful California Tide Pools.
The beach features a cove and a pier, and towards the left of the pier, you will see these beautiful tide pools filled with vibrant marine life like sea anemones, molluscs, Urchins, crabs and starfish.
The dock is also the departure point for Kayaking and Deep-sea fishing. You can see charted boats floating around.
William Randolph Hearst Memorial Beach is a favourite spot among the locals to spend a lovely evening or does various outdoor activities like swimming, beachcombing, fishing and Hiking.
Visit the nearby Coastal Discovery Center operated by the Sanctuary and NPS. The centre has plenty of excellent exhibits about the marine life in the region, including the History of San Simeon Bay.

LEFFINGWELL LANDING DAY USE AREA, HEARST SAN SIMEON STATE PARK
About 35 miles from San Luis Obispo, Hearst San Simeon State Park is home to many rocky peninsulae, coastal bluffs, and preserves that pass through gorgeous landscapes with vast ocean views.
The Leffingwell Landing Day use area, part of Hearst San Simeon State Park, is known for its one of the fantastic California tide pools, located at the Northern end of Moonstone Beach.
Take a short walk down to the beach from the parking lot, and a few miles from there will lead to this beautiful tide-pooling area.
When the water level recedes, you will see incredible marine life thriving, including marine plants like kelps, algae and seaweeds.
Hearst San Simeon State Park is a natural habitat of vibrant coastal birds and land birds, and you might witness endangered bird species like Western Snowy Plovers or warblers and thrushes in the lush vegetation.
The park is also home to famous preserves like the Santa Rosa Creek Natural Preserve and the Pa-nu Cultural Preserve. They also have well-equipped camping grounds if you are looking to camp.
Visit the nearby Morro Bay if you have extra time to spot rare and migratory birds.
PACIFICA TIDE POOLS
Located at a 20-minute driving distance from SF, Pacifica Tide Pools, also called Linda Mar State Beach, features one of the stunning California Tide Pools.
It is a perfect weekend vacation destination from San Francisco, especially if you are traveling with kids.
Visit the southernmost part of the beach to witness gorgeous isolated rock pools home to a vibrant underwater life filled with crabs and sea anemones.
During summer months, you may even spot Jellyfish. Caution! Don’t try to touch them since they come with a sting!
You may bump into fellow surfers at Pacifica State Beach since the beach is a hotspot for Surfing.
MACKERRICHER STATE PARK
For one of the best Northern California Tide Pools, visit Mackerricher State Park in Mendocino County.
From the craggy bluffs of the shoreline to the lush woodlands of the hills nearby, the views are incredible.
The beaches, dunes, dense forests and tide pools filled with abundant marine life make it a perfect setting for a weekend trip.
These underrated tide pools at Mackerricher State Park are easily accessible. Follow the boardwalk to Laguna Point; you will reach the stairs leading down to the bluff.
During low tides, you will be welcomed by colourful marine life, which makes the best of your tide-pooling experience.

GLASS BEACH TIDE POOLS
If you want to experience one of the unique California Tide Pools, check out the Glass Beach in Fort Bragg on Pacific Coast Highway, which is also one of the best things to do in Northern California.
Glass Beach is covered in little bits of colourful glass pebbles that are the remains of a former dump site here, where all the glass bottles eroded over and now look like coloured pebbles.
Now a state park, it is illegal to collect glass at Glass Beach to preserve the remaining shards. It is one of the perfect spots for a quick stop along the Pacific Coast Highway on your road trip to get down and take a stroll along the shore.
Besides these colourful pebbles, the beach is home to incredible tide pools. During low tides, you will see hermit crabs crawling on the rocky shores, sea urchins, vibrant starfishes and much more.
Wearing sturdy beach shoes is highly recommended before visiting this beach.
TRINIDAD STATE BEACH TIDE POOLS
Located in beautiful Humboldt County, Trinidad State Beach is known for its vast sandy shoreline stretched between the North of Trinidad Harbor and the pier.
Also, Trinidad has one of the colourful California Tide Pools filled with different aquatic animals. For the best tide pooling experience, check out College Cove North of Trinidad Beach.
You must take a short hike to reach the Trinidad State Beach tide pools, but the walk is worth the views. You will pass through woodlands, bluffs and trails dotted with coastal wildflowers.
At the end of the hike, you will see the natural arch near the North end of Trinidad State Beach.
Besides tide pools and the unique marine life, Trinidad State Beach offers a plethora of activities, like fishing, swimming, Surfing, kayaking, paddle boarding and beach combing.
PATRICK’S POINT STATE PARK HEADLANDS
Located at a 10-minute driving distance from Trinidad State Beach, Patrick’s Point State Park is a stunning North Californian area known for its headlands, a series of cliffs which offers spectacular sunset and Pacific views.
At the base of these cliffs are gorgeous California Tide Pools, filled with algae-covered rocks, vibrant coastal flowers, and tiny water pockets filled with crabs, starfishes, snails and urchins.
It is believed that the tide pools at Patrick have one of the roughest environments in the state, and the marine beings in these pools have adapted to these harsh conditions.
If you visit Patrick’s Point State Park during Spring or fall, you will spot migratory gray whales from various vantage points, including Palmer’s Point and Wedding Rock.
THE HOOK
One of the beautiful hidden gems on the list of California Tide Pools is the Hook, located in Hook County Park.
Accessing this tide pool is quite tricky but not impossible. You must find the stairs across the street at the end of 41st Avenue, which will lead you to this hidden paradise.
During low tides, you will see unique rock formations protecting these tide pools, green algae-covered rocks, seagrass and marine life like crabs and snails.
CAPITOLA BEACH/ NEW BRIGHTON STATE PARK
Located at a 10-minute driving distance from Santa Cruz, on the Monterey Bay, Capitola Beach has one of the unique California Tide Pools.
The unique draw of this beach is the ancient fossils of shells embedded in the clay-like cliffs, which are visible during low tide.
You can walk from the Capitola Esplanade to New Brighton State Park when the water level recedes. With a bit of rock scrambling, you will witness the magnificent intertidal ecosystem filled with numerous marine beings.
Wear sturdy beach shoes and carry enough beverages and other necessities.
SCOTT CREEK BEACH
About 20 minutes drive to the North of Santa Cruz will take you to Scott Creek Beach, home to another gorgeous set of California tide pools.
Scott Creek Beach is on a stunning stretch of rocky coastline surrounded by towering cliffs. This makes it an ideal location to spot Dolphins, Sea lions and many other local wildlife species.
You can spot sea urchins, stars, and octopuses during low tides. The beach is relatively shallow, an apt location for swimming and fishing.
Check out the interesting shipwrecks around the area, a unique backdrop for your candids.
SAN PEDRO TIDE POOLS

San Pedro is home to one of the amazing California Tide Pools, a unique slice of nature that allows you to explore the diverse sea life in the region.
Get an up-close look at the marine life that calls the area their home. The shallow waters make it much easier for you to spot anemones, starfishes, crabs and lobsters.
Besides Wildlife, these tide pools feature a variety of marine plants and seaweeds. These plants help create a perfect balance in the marine ecosystem and support the marine Wildlife co-habitat.
Go swimming or snorkelling on the nearby beach if you have spare time, or unwind on the sandy shores away from the hustle and bustle of the town.
