Nainital – A Heavenly Abode for a Short Getaway

by | India, Uttarakhand

It was a freezing and a chilly night when I got the first glimpse of this tiny hilly town in Uttarakhand. Locked away between the mighty mountains on all the side, Nainital throws a pleasant surprise to its visitors with breathtaking landscape, pristine lake, lush greenery and snow-capped hill top views. It is a feast for the eyes and for the travel aspiring soul to watch and get soaked in this bounty of nature.

Much of the town is around the Naini lake, which is the epicentre of the activities in Nainital. The lake is in the heart of the city, and it stretches all along the length of the town. The lake forms a crescent, across which the main road is popularly known as the ‘Mall Road’ is present. This road is home to some of the best street food, souvenirs and traditional woollen wear. The structural buildings resemble the Anglo-Indian architecture, thus retaining the charm of the decades bygone. One stroll along the road will take you until the other end of the road, which leads to the place of local deity – Naina Devi – after which the town is named. Outside the temple is the Nepal market, which is a perfect place for the shopaholics to indulge. While it is a pristine sight to behold as you walk along this street overlooking the lake, the beauty of this town elevates to a whole new level as you stride up the hills.

Nainital

After having the feel of this beautiful town, I scoured for places of interest and came across the famous attraction of the place – ‘Cable cars’ – which takes you to the top of the mountain. There is a view spot on the top which gives us a strikingly beautiful view of the majestic Himalayan mountain range across the distant horizon. The peaks of the mountains Everest, Nanda Devi, Trishul, Dronagiri can be seen from here. Although many rented taxis take you to the viewpoint, the cable car is a fantastic ride that needs to be experienced!

Apart from this, there are many viewpoints over the route which gives a bird view of this town. There are facilities for horse ride for people looking for some adventure; that would take you to the other side to reach Tiffin top – the first viewpoint of the town. En route, you will get a glimpse of the famed St.Xavier school and other reputed educational institutes.

Nainital

The high altitude Zoo in Nainital is another attraction renowned for some the unique species that thrive in the higher snowbound altitudes like snow leopard, deer and different species of pheasants. Although the area is small, the zoo is well maintained.

Nainital is a perfect getaway for people looking for short trips. It is accessible easily from most of the major towns – especially Delhi, which makes it one of the favourite weekend getaway. It is a rejuvenating experience to spend time in this idyllic hilly city. This town is so romantically beautiful that it beams with the newlyweds all the time. One visit to this beautiful hill station will make you realise why this is one of the hottest honeymoon destinations!!
